Opechancanough Miles' WWI Draft Registration Card

<p>Opechancanough Miles, a resident of Lester Manor Lane in King William County, filled out this draft registration card on September 12, 1918, at the age of twenty. The card asked all those registering to identify their race, including a section for citizen or noncitizen Indians. Miles, most likely a member of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, marked that he was a noncitizen Indian.</p>

1880 Census List for “Deaf-Mutes”

This is a page section from the 1880 U.S. Federal Census “Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes” representing a resident of Shenandoah County. According to the census, the “object of this Supplemental Schedule is to furnish material not only for a complete enumeration of deaf-mutes, but for an account of their condition.” The page notes that “<I>Special pains should be taken to indicate all deaf-mutes from birth</i>.” Emphasis theirs.

Draft Registration Card

L. Francis Griffin filled out this WWII draft registration card on October 16, 1940, when he was 21 years old. He stated that he was attending school at R. R. Morton (Moton) High School at the time of his registration. On the back of the card, he identified his race as “Negro,” his height at 5’11, his weight 167 lbs., his eye color brown, hair black, and complexion dark brown.
