Broken Ties & Brass Bands: From Secession to War is specifically designed to examine issues, events, and people key to the year 1861. Sessions will explore Virginia’s succession and how the United States moved from succession to war, what prompted some officers to resign from the U.S. Army and influenced others to remain in it, how women and African Americans reacted to the coming of war, and the military and political decisions faced by Lincoln and Davis.
