Description
A series of taped walking tours of historic locales in Virginia. The purpose of the program is to bring to the visually and physically handicapped resources of the humanities that are currently unavailable to them. Twelve hour-long radio programs will be produced consisting of a taped walking tour and a live call-in discussion. The walking tour portion will feature an historian and a non-sighted person as hosts who together with a local historian will describe the locale in detail and give appropriate factual information and historical background. The discussion portion will encourage dialogue among members of the handicapped community. Sites chosen for the programs include Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, the University of Virginia, and Old Town Alexandria. This project continues and expands a prototype series of radio walking tours initiated in 1979. At least five of that series have been selected by NPR for national use.
