Description
The U.S.S. Enterprise, at right, captures the H.M.S. Boxer near Portland, Maine, in a naval battle that took place on September 5, 1813, during the War of 1812. In the initial exchange of canon fire, the Americans mortally wounded the Boxers commander and inflicted heavy damage to the ships rigging. The English surrendered their vessel after about an hour of fighting. The Enterprise, built as a schooner in 1799, was converted to a brig—a sailing vessel with two square-rigged masts—in 1811-1812. The Boxer had been built and launched in July 1812.
