Description
The official mascot for the University of Virginia—a rider dressed as a seventeenth-century cavalier wearing a cape and a plumed hat—rides across the football field before the start of a 2009 game against Texas Christian University. In 1923, students held a contest for the best alma mater and fight songs. One of the winners, The Cavalier Song, led students to begin calling their football team the Cavaliers rather than the Orange and Blue.
