This is the illustrated cover for the 1879 edition of William Stills The Underground Rail Road. Originally published in 1872 and republished numerous times, this book narrates the history of the Underground Railroad and the individual stories of enslaved men and women who escaped bondage by fleeing to free states and to Canada. According to the title page, Still was for many years connected with the Anti-Slavery office in Philadelphia, and Chairman of the Acting Vigilant Committee of the Philadelphia Branch of the Underground Rail Road.
