Thomas Willis White, the founder and longtime principal editor of the Southern Literary Messenger, is the subject of this oil portrait that hangs in the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond. In 1835, White hired the then-unknown Edgar Allan Poe to be the journals literary editor.
