Marion Johnson

This 1962 photograph shows Marion Johnson, the president of the Seminary Civic Association and the vice president of the Alexandria Council on Human Relations, holding plans for a middle-class Black subdivision in the Seminary neighborhood of Alexandria’s Mudtown Urban Renewal Project. His advocacy helped to house over a quarter of the families who were going to be displaced by the project.

Integrated John Roberts Public Housing

This late 1960s photograph shows several residents of the recently integrated John Roberts Homes housing project in Alexandria meeting in one of their yards. The John Roberts Homes project was originally constructed as segregated housing in the Braddock neighborhood, reserved solely for white residents.
