A pencil sketch by an unknown student at the University of Virginia depicts Our German Professor, Mr. Schele de Vere. Maximilian Schele De Vere served as a professor of modern languages at the university from 1844 until he resigned in 1895. This sketch, which depicts the professor without his distinctive sideburns and mustache, likely dates to early in his tenure.
