Description
A woman working at the Dan River Mills in Danville in the 1940s tends a long row of bobbins being wound with thread on spinning frames. Women who performed this job were known as spinners, and they had to move quickly up and down rows of bobbins, repairing any breaks or snags in the thread. Demand for textiles was high at the time because of World War II military orders. Citation: Picture file from the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Richmond News-Leader, Accession #9698, Special Collections, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.
