SHORT DESCRIPTION: Hand colored engraving from newspaper. Two archways on the engraving show two different views of treatment of blacks for punishment. The first image shows a black man being sold at auction. A clip of a newspaper article underneath the image has headline reading, Negroes Sold as a Punishment for Crime. This article tells of such sales occuring in Baltimore in December of 1866. The image on the right side shows a man whipping a bare­backed black man as the black man, on his knees leans over a statue of the blindfolded lady justice. Under this image is a clip of a newspaper article from Raleigh North Carolina dated December 22, 1866 with headline reading, Negroes Whipped as a Punishment for Crime.
