Description
In a page from Lewis Millers Sketchbook of Landscapes in the State of Virginia, two white men on horseback lead a group of twenty enslaved men, women, and children who are being forced to walk barefoot to Tennessee. The slaves had been purchased in Staunton, Augusta County. Writing on the page, the artist noted that the sight of such forced marches was commonly in this State, with the negros in droves Sold.
