Stanley addressing members of the state commission formedto find legal means … to preserve segregated schools … in Virginia. The commission was assembled in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision inBrown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, handed down on May 17, 1954, which mandated the desegregation of public schools.
