Description
A snapshot taken at the Belmont Stakes on June 9, 1973, shows Helen Bates Penny Chenery Tweedy, the owner of the thoroughbred Secretariat, at center, in profile. Secretariat won the race that day by thirty-one lengths and set a record for time (two minutes twenty-four seconds) on the 1.5-mile dirt track, clinchingthe Triple Crown. This image is contained in an album of photographs assembled by A. Linwood Holton, then governor of Virginia, who attended the race.
