Description
This is the title page of W. Bishop Johnsons The Scourging of a Race (1904), a collection of sermons and speeches by the author, a black Canadian bishop. Johnson, identified here as the pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., and an editor of the National Baptist Magazine, argued in the book that African Americans were being punished—or being subjected to a scourging—for their unfaithfulness and ingratitude toward God.
