Description
The television film "Roots" by Alex Haley was shown at the Moton Community House in Newport News for seven consecutive Sundays in August and September 1980. Following each showing of the film, a humanities scholar commented on
the origin and historical background of slavery, Reconstruction, and modern racial issues, and initiated a question and answer period with the audience. The programs provided a context in which participants could reflect on their values and hopes for the future. The sponsor was disappointed in the audience size but felt that the series did generate community spirit among many long- time residents in a declining area of this industrial city. |
