Description
This engraving titled Resurrection of Henry Box Brown, at Philadelphia serves as the frontispiece for the book Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown, Written by Himself (1851) published in Manchester, England. The engraving depicts the scene of runaway slave Henry Brown being released from the box in which he was transported from Richmond to Philadelphia. Brown reached freedom through this ingenious method. Robert Langton, who executed the image, was a well-known local engraver in Manchester who specialized in archaeological, architectural, and historical engravings.
