Description
A report by Professor T. J. Jackson for the week ending May 27, 1853, grades the daily performance of the thirteen students in his natural philosophy class at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. Before becoming the renowned Confederate general known as Stonewall, Thomas J. Jackson taught natural and experimental philosophy (akin to modern physics) and artillery at VMI for ten years. The Scale of Daily Merit that a student could score ranged from a high of 3 (Thorough) to 0 (Complete Failure). All of Jacksons students achieved at least a 1 (Very Imperfect) on their daily assessments.
