This circa 1778 map details Illinois Country, an area east of the Mississippi River that stretched south from the village of Cahokia to Kaskaskia (spelled her as Kaskaskias) in the present-day state of Illinois. Long inhabited by Indian nations, this region came under French control in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, then British control after the French and Indian War in 1763, and then American control after General George Rogers Clark invaded in 1778 as part of the Revolutionary Wars western campaign.
