Description
This petition for freedom, brought before the Northampton County Court in July 1732, claims that the petitioner, Nanny Bandy, had been born free but was being illegally detained in Slavery … contrary to the laws of this Government. Bandy said that she had proof that her mother was white, and therefore should be set at Liberty. According at a 1662 law, if a white woman had a child with an enlaved man, the childs racial status was determined by the mothers race.
