Description
Three forums on the general theme of Human Rights involving law scholars,
historians, a political scientist, a philosopher, a theologian, and two activists in lecture, discussion, and debate. The first forum, "The Supreme Court and Individual Rights," addressed the legal and philosophical questions associated with the Bill of Rights and their interpretation by the Supreme Court. The second forum, "The Status of Women Through the Ages," addressed the rights and roles of women from an historical perspective. The final forum, a debate format entitled "Should the Proposed 27th Amendment to the Constitution (Equal Rights Amendment) Be Approved," was argued by two nationally known activists, with panel questions coming from humanists in education, religious studies, sociology, and literature. Audience evaluation responses to all three forums indicated much success in promoting inquiry and analysis into the subject matter, with an average of 9% stating that their attitudes were changed as a result of the programs. The debate on the Equal Rights Amendment was videotaped and broadcast on a public television station. |
