Description

This house, constructed around 1830 in Winchester, is located on the site of a Seven Years’ War fort called Fort Loudoun. It is to serve as the interpretive center of the Fort Loudoun historic site. In 1756 George Washington designed Fort Loudoun to be used as a command center and supply depot for the Virginia Regiment during the Seven Years’ War. Loudoun was the largest of a series of forts constructed in the Virginia backcountry around this time, and a significantly improved design from Fort Necessity, the first fort Washington planned. The actual structure of Fort Loudoun no longer survives, but archaeological work in the area continues to unearth artifacts from the Seven Years’ War.
