Description

An Onondaga man, called “Red Head” by Sir William Johnson, the British superintendent of Indian affairs for the northern district, drew up this map for British forces to use during the 1759 Niagara campaign of the French and Indian War. The map, which showed with unprecedented detail the eastern side of Lake Ontario, provided a navigable route from Fort Stanwix to La Galette (Oswegatchie on the map). It proved to be of great strategic use to Great Britain. Guy Johnson, Sir William Johnson’s son-in-law and successor, drew this cleaned up and labeled version of Red Head’s sketch and description.
