Description

Sir William Johnson, at the time the Major General of English forces in America, is the subject of this 1756 portrait engraving. The artist, Charles Spooner, copied a mezzotint by Thomas Adams. Johnson later became the British superintendent of Indian affairs for the northern district due to his successful diplomacy with the Mohawk, in part owing to his unofficial marriage with Mohawk leader Konwatsi’tsiaienni (anglicized to Mary Brant) and good relationship with her brother, Thayendanegea (or Joseph Brant).
