Description

John Murray, fourth earl of Dunmore and colonial governor of Virginia, called for the construction of Fort Fincastle in the summer of 1774, at the outbreak of a war with the Shawnee and Mingo tribes of the Ohio region. The fort, constructed on the Ohio River near Wheeling Creek, was named after Dunmore, as he held the title of Viscount Fincastle. Virginian Patriots renamed the fort after the outbreak of the American Revolution, when they began to hold the colonial governor in contempt. They chose the name Fort Henry to honor firebrand public speaker [Patrick Henry.]
