Description

An engraved map delineates the boundary line negotiated by Sir William Johnson, the superintendent of Indian affairs, and the Iroquois Confederacy at the treaty of Fort Stanwix. Shawnee and Cherokee residents of the Ohio country were not included in the negotiations, setting the stage for future conflict. In the early 1770s squatters from Pennsylvania and Virginia began to clash with Indigenous groups who had never agreed to the boundary line, and felt as though their land had been sold from beneath them. John E. Gavit of Albany, NY made this facsimile engraving in the mid 19th century, copied from the original 1768 map drawn by Johnson’s son-in-law, Guy Johnson.
