Young Emma Lewis skips rope in Vinegar Hill, her Charlottesville neighborhood, in 1963. This photograph was taken by sixteen-year-old Gundars Osvalds, the photographer for his local (white) High School newspaper, who had learned of the urban renewal plans for Vinegar Hill and decided to document the soon-to-be-razed community. According to his introduction to the 2015 photobook Vinegar Hill 1963: Life in the Neighborhood, “my visit to Vinegar Hill was comparable to a visit in a foreign country.” Despite being an outsider, Osvalds managed to capture some of the vibrant local culture of Vinegar Hill.
