<p>This is the first page of “Street by Street, Block by Block: How Urban Renewal Uprooted Black Roanoke,” a special section of the <em>Roanoke Times & World-News</em> by Mary Bishop, published on January 29, 1995. The section, which featured interviews and family photographs from Gainsboro residents, challenged the city’s assertion that urban renewal had been a universal good for the city.</p>
