<p>A member of the Queen’s Rangers’ light infantry, dressed in a green uniform and a black feathered cap adorned with a crescent moon, speaks to a member of the unit’s light cavalry, identified in the image as a “huzzar” (hussar,) who is on horseback. This is one of a series of three prints, copied from drawings done in 1780 by a captain of the Queen’s Rangers. They were a loyalist regiment, a new iteration of a company of scouts that had been formed during the Seven Years War by Captain Robert Rogers to be a lightweight and mobile vanguard of the regular British troops. Rogers reformed the Rangers in New York at the outbreak of the American Revolution. In October of 1777 John Graves Simcoe became the commanding officer, and under his leadership the Rangers gained a reputation for discipline and effectiveness.</p>
