Description

John Graves Simcoe, British officer during the American Revolution and governor of Upper Canada in the 1790s, poses for this portrait in a red military jacket with his sword at his side. Simcoe earned a reputation as an effective military leader while commanding the Queen’s Rangers, a loyalist regiment that carried out many successful operations in Virginia. Historian J.A. Houlding wrote in his Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry that Simcoe was “as contemptuous of the military capacity of his adversaries as he was of their republicanism.” This ca. 1881 painting by George Theodore Berthon is a copy of a life portrait by an unknown artist.
