Description

This map of central Virginia, entitled: Campagne en Virginie du Major Général M'is de LaFayette : ou se trouvent les camps et marches, ainsy que ceux du Lieutenant Général Lord Cornwallis en 1781, created by the Marquis de Lafayette’s aide-de-camp Michel Capitaine du Chesnoy, shows points of interest of Lafayette’s Virginia campaign with notes and dates of military actions. Capitaine’s maps are notable for their accuracy, and for how they tell a military narrative. In this case, the map shows how Lafayette kept Cornwallis’s army engaged in minor actions until Washington’s forces and the French navy were able to strategically coalesce at Yorktown.
