Description

A young woman clutching her infant child races from a burning building in this provoking illustration entitled: “Incident in the Burning of Norfolk” from Cassell’s History of the United States. The London publishing house of Cassell Petter & Galpin, which produced this illustration, published cheap and heavily illustrated histories throughout the Victorian era for a popular audience. The illustrations were designed to elicit an emotional response rather than to accurately portray a historic moment, but the print successfully conveys how the burning of Norfolk came to be remembered as an example of British ruthlessness during the American Revolution.
