Description

This page from the Virginia Teacher’s Association (VTA) Bulletin volume 41, number 4, published in January of 1960, advertises a “history kit” for the thirty-fifth annual celebration of Negro History Week. The VTA was an organization of Black educators who advocated for their students by calling for improved pay for teachers, providing professional resources, and creating new Black history curriculums. Virginia had two separate teacher’s professional organizations until 1967, the VTA for Black teachers and the Virginia Educational Association for white. By advertising for kits such as this one, the VTA helped classroom educators include Black history in their coursework.
