Description

A crane demolishes a building behind a boarded-up house in this photograph of East Ghent, Norfolk, part of the collection of the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA). Demolition of housing in East Ghent began in February of 1970, and went on for several years. While earlier urban renewal projects in Norfolk had led to the construction of public housing, the NHRA did not build comparatively priced housing to replace what they had destroyed. Instead, developers constructed upper middle-class homes and townhomes, dramatically changing East Ghent’s affordability and demographic makeup.
