Description

This 1916 photograph shows a class of students at Moore Street School in Richmond, attending class in an “open-air” classroom. The goal of “open-air” classrooms was to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and protect children vulnerable to disease from crowded classrooms. The Moore Street School, constructed in the Carver neighborhood in 1887, was a segregated elementary school intentionally built for Black students. The structure still stands, and local groups are raising money to restore it into a community center.
