Description

This portrait photograph, taken by Charlottesville’s Holsinger studio, shows Anthony T. Buckner and his granddaughter, Eileen Buckner. Born into slavery in Spotsylvania County in 1845, Buckner had been a young man at the outbreak of the Civil War. Enslaved by a man who enlisted in the Confederate army, Buckner ended up accompanying him as a servant for the entirety of the war. After emancipation, Buckner moved to Charlottesville and lived in Vinegar Hill, where he became a successful merchant.
