This is the front page of the very first issue of <I>The People’s Advocate,</i> published in Alexandria on April 29, 1876. The newspaper was created by and for the Black community of Alexandria, with <a href="http://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/Cromwell_John_Wesley_1846-1927">John Wesley Cromwell</a> as its editor, and Traverse Benjamin Pinn Sr. as its publisher and business manager.
