This photograph, taken in 1936, shows Ivey Foreman Lewis sitting at his desk in the Biology Department. There are maps on the wall behind him, and piles of papers on the desk. He is smoking a pipe. Lewis, a botanist and geneticist, taught eugenics at the University of Virginia from 1915 until 1953.
