"Excerpts" is a study of the diaries of Virginia women prior to the Civil War. This would be the written companion to a lecture series called "Brief History of the Unravelling of a Tangled Project." In this research, prolific author Katie Letcher Lyle sought out diaries of Virginia women in private collections, archives, libraries in Virginia and nearby states, carefully categorizing and compiling them. Despite that few diaries exist without extensive damage or that only fragments remain (many illegible), the study led to a brilliant work called "Voices from the Past," which highlights excerpts and provides detailed and thoughtful commentary on the nature of the art of the diarists.
