Description
Williamsburg, Virginia has witnessed an unprecedented influx of immigrants from Latin America, raising questions about the changes that these newcomers will bring to this historic area. Based on five years of ethnographic research, this project tells the story of Latino immigration to Williamsburg from the perspectives of immigrants, social service and healthcare providers, "native" residents and migrants' familes in Mexican "home" communities. Analyzing the impact of the "new immigration" on the socioeconomic and political landscape of a place that occupies a unique position in the national imaginary of the U.S. will deepen understandings of immigrant incorporation in "new gateways" as well as shifting definitions of citizenship and democracy in today's globally interconnected world.
