Description
This project was the beginnings of the development of a digital database of materials relating to the lives of African-Virginians in the eighteenth century. Working with the staff of the Virginia Center for Digital History (VCDH), all available runaway slave notices from Virginia newspapers in the eighteenth century were digitized into a database that can be used to illuminate the lives of African Virginians. With the help and advice of the VCDH staff, the database was then expanded to include selected resources from published and unpublised primary materials from the holdings of the University of Virginia special collections and various published accounts. The project added significantly to on-going efforts of the VCDH to digitize and make available a variety of sources for Virginia history.
