Description
"Higher Aim" follows the reform efforts of survivors and others profoundly moved to act after the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings. The nation has mourned repeated instances of mass violence since the murders of thirty-two students and faculty members in Blacksburg. But the initiatives of survivors, families and community members have remained largely unexamined as the nation struggles for solutions while violent attacks continue. Resources available through the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the University of Virginia help bring academic and scientific rigor to a journalistically reported narrative of several moving personal stories that chiefly center on three areas: guns, safety, and healing, with specific interest in the work of legal and social science experts and political scholars. As a journalist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, reporter Tom Kapsedelis worked in Blacksburg the day of the shootings and afterwards as the paper's on-site editor.
