Description
This reconstructed slave cabin stands on the grounds of Stratford Hall, a tobacco plantation in Westmoreland County owned for generations by the Lee family. It was erected in 1941 in honor of William Wesley Payne, an African American who worked on the estate for many years before it was purchased by the Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation (later the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association). The first president of the foundation offered to build a monument to Payne, whose family members were the longest-term residents at Stratford Hall, but he preferred that a cabin, similar to the one he was born in, be built instead.
