A political cartoon by Thomas Nast, published in the August 5, 1865, edition of Harpers Weekly, depicts Columbia, the symbol of American liberty, presentimng an African American who lost his leg fighting for the Union Army. In the background is a tattered Ameican flag with the stripes reading Fort Pillow and Fort Wagner, Civil War battles in which large numbers of African Americans lost their lives.
