Speech of Mr. Tucker, of Virginia, on the Restriction of Slavery in Missouri

This is the first page of a printed account of a speech delivered by George Tucker in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 25, 1820, during debate over the Missouri Compromise. Tucker, a congressman from Virginia, argued that restricting slavery in Missouri would threaten not only the peace and welfare of Virginia, in common with all the slave-holding states, but, their very political existence.
