Edward M. Alfriend sports a bushy mustache in the portrait that appears in Notable New Yorkers of 1896-1899: A Companion Volume to Kings Handbook of New York City (1899). Alfriend, a native of Richmond, became a popular playwright in New York in the 1890s and was included in the section of the book that featured the most prominent dramatists of the day.
