An Address to the Convention of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia

The title page of a 1776 pamphlet entitled An Address to the Convention of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia, on the Subject of Government in General, and Recommending a Particular Form to Their Consideration indicates only that the author is a Native of that Colony. The tract was written by Carter Braxton and was intended as a corrective to what he perceived as excessively democratic ideas in John Adamss Thoughts on Government, which had been published the same year. Braxtons text, together with rumors that his wife and father-in-law were Loyalists, generated severe criticism from many of the Revolutionary leaders in Virginia.
