Description
The Historie of Travaile into Virginia Britannia, the title page of which is shown above, was written by Jamestown settler William Strachey in 1612. A rich source of information about early Virginia Indians especially, the Virginia Company of London declined to publish it because of its criticisms of colonial leadership. Company officials also feared it would compare unfavorably with John Smiths history, published the same year. The Hakluyt Society, which is devoted to publishing books concerning exploration, travel, and geography, finally published the book in 1849.
