Description
William Strachey, one of the earliest historians of the Jamestown settlement, included a fourteen-page dictionary of Indian words at the end of his 1612 book The Historie of Travaile into Virginia Britannica, a first-hand account of early Virginia. Strachey recognized the importance of interacting with the Indians, and designed his 400-word list with interpreters in mind.
