This map depicts the positions and movements of Union troops (in blue) and Confederate troops (in red) on May 5, 1864, on the first day of the Battle of the Wilderness, which took place in a seventy-square-mile patch of tangled undergrowth near Fredericksburg. This battle was the opening engagement of the Overland Campaign.
